Leadership Lessons Daily: Day 165

Scripture Passage: 1 Samuel 13:5-14
Wise Leaders Recognise That They Cannot Be Everything to Everyone
Saul was the king of Israel and Samuel was the prophet and priest. They both occupied different offices with different functions. As prophet and priest it was Samuel’s duty to offer up sacrifices to God. However, at Gilgal, when Samuel delayed to come and offer the sacrifice, Saul stepped into Samuel’s shoes as priest and offered up a sacrifice. This action led to the loss of his place as king of Israel. He tried to be king, prophet and priest to the nation of Israel but learnt the hard way that he could not be all three successfully.
The lesson here is this; wise leaders recognise that they cannot be everything to everyone. Each person has a place. Wise leaders are aware of this truth, and they adhere to it. They stay in their place and discharge their duties while permitting and encouraging those they lead to do same.
Prayer: Father, help me to know my place and to stay there.
