Leadership Lessons Daily: Day 169

Scripture Passage: 1 Samuel 16:1-12
Never Judge a Leader by His Appearance
When Eliab, Jesse’s oldest son, passed before Samuel, he presumed he was the king God had chosen. However, God said, “look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature because I have refused him; for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the hearth.” Eliab passed the physical test but failed the heart test. David showed up and although he failed the physical test, he passed the heart test and became Israel’s greatest king.
The lesson here is this; never judge a leader by his appearance. He may not conform to your personal image of what a leader should be, but if his heart is in the right place, then he has all that it takes to become a great leader. Leaders should not be judged by their appearance and should refrain from judging others by their appearance.
Prayer: Father, help me to see beyond the looks of others.
