Leadership Lessons Daily: Day 182

Scripture Passage: 1 Samuel 18:17-19 & 17:25
Bad Leaders Do Not Keep Their Word
When David went to fight Goliath it was with the understanding that Saul would reward the man who killed Goliath with his daughter’s hand in marriage. However, Saul failed to keep this promise. Afterwards, he said to David, “behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife only be thou valiant for me and fight the Lord’s battles.” This was second promise but the Bible says, “When Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David she was given to Adriel.” Saul was not a promise keeper and therefore lacked integrity.
The lesson here is this; bad leaders do not keep their word. Failure to keep one’s word sets bad leaders apart from good leaders. A good leader will do all it takes to keep his word because he knows that a man who breaks his word breaks trust and loses influence. A bad leader however will break his word without a thought.
Prayer: Father, help me to keep my word.
