Leadership Lessons Daily: Day 183

Scripture Passage: 1 Samuel 18:16
Leaders Gain Influence Through Service
The Bible says concerning David, “But all Israel loved David because he went out and came in before them.” David served Israel as a commander in Saul’s army, leading them out to war and leading them in after war. This selfless service to his nation endeared all to him.
The lesson here is this; leaders gain influence through service. Leadership is a call to serve and not to be served. When leaders recognise this truth and act upon it they gain the hearts of those they lead and with it, influence. However, when leaders seek to be served, they lose the hearts of those they lead and with it influence. And according to John Maxwell, “leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.” If a leader has no influence then he is really not a leader. He may just be a person occupying a leadership position. And if a leader will gain influence he will have to serve others.
Prayer: Father, help me to serve those I lead selflessly.
