Leadership Lessons Daily: Day 287

Scripture Passage: Nehemiah 6:5-14
The Leader Who Will Succeed Must Have Discernment
Sanballat and Tobiah tried in many ways to distract Nehemiah from re-building the walls of Jerusalem. One time they hired Shemaiah who said to Nehemiah, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.” But the Bible reveals Nehemiah’s thoughts; “And lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me; for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.”
The lesson here is this; the leader who will succeed must have discernment. Discernment is simply the ability to judge well. And this ability goes beyond the use of the five senses. A leader who relies only on his five senses to make judgements will soon get into trouble. Nehemiah needed more than his five senses to recognise the trap set by Tobiah and Sanballat.
Prayer: Father, give me discernment.
