Leadership Lessons Daily: Day 310

Scripture Passage: Matthew 8:5-10
Only Leaders Under Authority Can Exercise Authority
Jesus once met a centurion who understood how authority works. He said to Jesus “For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.” His soldiers obeyed him because he was under authority. His ability to extract obedience from his subordinates was rooted in his submission to his superiors.
The lesson here is this; only leaders under authority can exercise authority. Those who obey are empowered to command. Those who fail to obey leaders in authority will find that as leaders they reap rebellion amongst those they lead. If you will exercise authority effectively, you must first submit under the authority of others.
Prayer: Father, help me to submit to those placed in authority over my life so that those I lead may submit to my authority.
