Leadership Lessons Daily: Day 316

Scripture Passage: Matthew 20:20-28
True Leadership is Earned
James and John desired to be leaders and so their mother came to lobby Jesus. Jesus seized the opportunity to teach His disciples about leadership. He said, “ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you; but whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant. Even as the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Therefore, if James and John desired to be leaders, they had to earn it through service.
The lesson here is this; true leadership is earned. And it is earned by service. The one who serves the interest of a people becomes their leader. He may not have the leadership title but he will certainly have the influence. And as leadership guru, John Maxwell says, “Leadership is influence, nothing more nothing less.”
Prayer: Father, help me to be a servant leader like Jesus.
